What the diffrence between artilary, missiles, rockets, motars and rail and coil guns?
The term “Artillery” is a general term that describes all of these things. I believe people who have answered wrongly assume that “Artillery” means the same thing as “Howitzer”, which is the most common from of Artillery. A howitzer is a gun. It’s a big gun. Compare it to a similar weapon, an anti-tank gun, anti-tank guns fire a straight “line of sight” to their target whereas Howitzers fire upwards and follow an arching pattern of movement, raining down their shells from above. Some weapons can be used in a “dual purpose” role, and so in some respects, the distinction between Howitzer and anti-tank gun is more how it is used. Having said that, there are some larger guns (155mm, 203mm) that are strictly Howitzers. When one says “rockets” one generally refers to unguided rocket propelled weapons. Artillery can perform different jobs: it’s main one is giving fire support to troops in the field. Artillery shells are effective, relatively cheap, accurate, and powerful. They can fire away from harm and are usually not in the midst of a battle. Rockets are objects that are propelled with a rocket engine, or a jet engine with it’s own propellant. In the military, a rocket is essentially a bomb with a rocket engine. They are usually used against armored vehicles and structures because of their strong power. Missiles are sophisticated rockets that can be controlled or guided in some way remotely or automatically. Mortars are miniaturized artillery. They are portable and can be set up and used quicker than artillery, but in turn has less firepower. Rail guns have a capacitor that discharges and creates a powerful magnetic field on two parallel rails with a projectile in between.
