What the heck is a didgeridoo?
A didgeridoo (or didjeridu or yidaki) is an Australian aboriginal instrument played by Wallis Buchanan on several Jamiroquai songs, including “When You Gonna Learn,” “Didgin’ Out,” “Journey to Arnhemland,” “Didjital Vibrations,” and “Didjerama.” “This endblown wind instrument is an unstopped hollowed piece of either bamboo or termite-hollowed eucalyptus about four or five feet long, and about two+ inches in internal diameter, with a mouthpiece made out of bees-wax. The small termites eat the core out of the wood, but they won’t touch the surrounding wood as it is poisonous to them little buggers. The player uses the circular breathing technique to maintain a never-stopping drone; it is done by taking a ‘snapped’ breath through the nose and the mouth and cheeks used as a natural bagpipe – storing and pressing out the air by squeezing the cheeks.” Songs of the Serpent – the Didgeridoo To see images of Wallis playing his didge at Jamiroquai concerts, follow this link and this link.
