What Theater Did William Shakespeare Company Build?
The Queen’s men, the company that Shakespeare was a member of, argued with the owner of the land their theatre, called the Theatre, was on in Shoreditch, Giles Allen, who wanted to increase their rent. Waiting until Allen had gone on his Christmas holidays, The Queen’s men tore down the building, piled it onto 16 wagons, and transported the lot across London Bridge to the Southbank at Southwark where, 15-16 months later, the brand new Globe theatre debuted with the Shakespeare play HenryV.
