What tools and techniques have personally found to be effective in making geographically disperse development teams more productive?
From my experience, it is not really tools or techniques or development platforms that lead to success with dispersed teams. CVS handles the technical details for development teams managing code contention, the real challenges are communication. And this is not to mean telecommunications, the challenges are interaction between team members who haven’t met, haven’t connected outside the job level, on the personal level. So, tools you can use to make a geographically dispersed team successful….that’s harder than it should be, and depends on the type of project. My first choice would be face time – if the teams will be working together for more than 6 or 9 months it is worth the coin to get them together for a month or so (as long as possible, and as much off work time as possible). That not withstanding, instant messaging is a great tool, and so is video conferencing, but both require proximity in time, which isn’t always so easy.
