What tropical species yield edible fruits?
Many hundreds of species, producing millions of tonnes of food each month. Some are widely cultivated, such as bananas and citrus fruits, and are substantial items in international trade. But most fruits are sold in local markets or at the roadside, or are collected and eaten directly by individuals and families. A regular supply of fruits that are eaten by wild animals can be indirectly important, by keeping up the supply of bush meat.
