What two things do critics of the canals handover to panama believe?
The two main criticisms were: The conservative US point of view: “It is OUR canal! We built it! We own it!” And “The Panamanians won’t know how to operate it and shipping will suffer.” To the first point, Panamanians believe the treaty that granted rights to the USA to build the canal and own a ten mile wide path through the country, should never have been in force. The man who signed for Panama was not a citizen of Panama and had no right or authority to make a treaty. As for the second point, the Panamanians have steadily increased traffic each year. They have maintained the canal and increased its efficiency. They have made plans to widen the canal and construction is underway…all under Panamanian management and control.
