I’m sorry but that is not true; it is all about the frequency that you use. I work at a mobile phone provider, and many people have trouble with this because they are uninformed. Japan, for example, makes no use of the GSM network, but rather of the 3G (also known as UMTS) network. The frequencies are 3G 2100 and 3G 1700. This means that you will need a cell phone that has 3G built in, and look for the specific frequencies! Even when someone from North America travels to Europe, or the other way around, trouble can be expected. European cell phones make use of different GSM frequencies than the North American ones. A quad band cell phone solves this problem. EDIT: W- CDMA is a type of 3G which I described above, it is not a different standard.
