Nutty, a hairline fracture is and can be very painful. The outside lining of a bone is cover with a membrane called periosteum. This layer has many nerve fibers in it thus causing the pain. Don’t think it is painful then just hit your shin bone and you will have significant pain. So in the case of a hairline fracture of the metatarsal you are placing pressure on the bone with every step that you take and that will cause pain. A hairline fracture is sometime very difficult to see and is often missed but the pain and ensuing dysfunction are not.
