What type of prison sentence would a serial killer get (USA)?
If they were convicted in a state that has the death penalty they could receive the death penalty, but that would be determined at the beginning of the trial if the death penalty would be sought. However, even if given the death penalty the offender can petition to have the sentence changed to life without parole. In a state where there is no death penalty they would most likely get life without parole. We have an inmate at my facility who killed four people (including a pregnant woman) who was given the death penalty, but had his sentenced changed to life without parole.
