What type of training does the physician have to be a sport medicine doctor?

0

All sport medicine physicians hold an MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree and then possess further primary care training in an area such as family medicine. Sport medicine training is then undertaken after the primary care training. Since sport medicine is not yet an official medical specialty, training backgrounds can vary. Some sport medicine physicians may have completed a formal fellowship training program but this is not a mandatory requirement. In Alberta, sport medicine physicians are required to obtain the Diploma in Sport Medicine (Dip. Sport Med.) from the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine before they can publicly state they have a practice in sport medicine.
