What types of cabinets should an island include?
The question was partially answered earlier; when you figure out what you want the island to do, choosing what to put in it is easier. For food preparation, you’ll want a sink at least, maybe even a cook top. Then you’ll need counterspace to chop, mix, and set dishes. You may also want some electrical outlets somewhere, but not where you’ll splash food or water on them. In addition, put in some trash pullouts so you don’t have to walk far with waste. With that type of cabinet, you simply scoop garbage right off the counter into the can. If the island is to be a gathering place, and many are, then you will probably want a raised section. Making the counter top for this section a half-round will allow everyone to be involved in the conversation.
