There are two types: 1. federal question jurisdiction 2. diversity jurisdiction Federal question jurisdiction matters typically arise out of federal laws, such as bankruptcy, Bill of Rights, etc. Keep in mind that some these questions can also be settled by state courts. Diversity jurisdictions matters arise when plaintiff and defendant are from two different states, and the defendant is afraid that he will not get a fair trial in the state court.  more
