What types of insulin pumps are available in the UK?
There are a few different insulin pumps available in the UK, sir, but I only have experience of using one … well, several, but from the same manufacturer, Medtronic/MiniMed. If you’re thinking of obtaining one on the NHS, there are certain criteria that you must meet before you’ll be able to get one. NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) state: “NICE recommends insulin pump use in cases where multiple dose insulin therapy has failed*, and the person is willing and able to use pump therapy effectively. A trained specialist team, with a specialist interest in pump therapy”. This means, of course, that your doctor/endocrinologist must ascertain whether or not one would be suitable for allowing you to control your blood glucose (sugar) levels more effectively.
