There are steel bollards, concrete, wood, and plastic. Architectural bollards are usually cast iron.

Different materials are used for different applications. Wood are cheap but do not provide good protection (used for parking lots, parks, etc.) Steel and concrete are obviously very strong. Plastic is used for a flexible bollard.
