What variables influencing the formation of hydrophobic soils were used as criteria for this study?
The following variables are important determinants to the formation of soil hydrophobicity: • Vegetation Age • Slope • Vegetation Community • Aspect How was the data obtained for this study? • Vegetation Age and their locations were determined from the shapefiles of the seven fires, dating back to 1919, depicting burned areas within the park boundaries. Shapefiles were obtained from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Forestry Division. • Slope and Aspect were determined from a DEM obtained from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Forestry Division. • Vegetation Communities were determined by digitizing the shapefiles for each vegetation community (chaparral, coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, grassland, and riparian) within the 314-acre park. Digitizing was performed using 1-foot resolution aerial imagery supplied by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Forestry Division (see Image below). Digitizing the vegetation communities was performed with 1-ft resolution aerial imager
