Simon in English. Shimon or Simeon in Hebrew. In the Bible, God renames people of significance and, yes, Catholics along with the greatest majority of Christians believe Jesus is God. God renames Abram to Abraham: “No longer shall you be called Abram; your name shall be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a host of nations.” (Genesis 17:5) and his wife too, Sarai to Sarah: God further said to Abraham: “As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai; her name shall be Sarah.” (Genesis 17:15) God also renames Jacob as Israel: “What is your name?” the man asked.
