Rather than take advantage of this major victory against the Viet Cong, Congress declared that the US should gradually pull out or, as some say abandon, South Vietnam. By the end of 1972, some 90% of South Vietnam was “pacified”. Many ARVN units fought hard for the next three years against the invading North Vietnamese army, but in 1975, lacking US support, the South Vietnamese were finally overwhelmed.
