It depends on your definition of religion. The last world religions class I took described a few theories for the origin of religions/spirituality but most theories have in common the idea that early peoples couldn’t explain certain natural phenomena so they attributed what looked like intelligent action with intelligent forces. Simply put, they personified the world around them because they didn’t know any better. Remember, these early humans had the same brains as us (mostly) and had active imaginations but little knowledge of how the world truly works.
