You have great answers and size, my opinion, was not the most dangerous. The MOST dangerous were those whose location(s) were UNKNOWN. Size really was not important if smaller subs carrying, maybe less, missiles with adequate and/or equal capabilities with unknown positions. True, the "huge" Russian subs were intimidating, nothing more. A show of "dominate power" not necessary during the "Cold War" due to the abundance of "subs" on missions by both the U.S. and Soviets. Remember, any means of "propaganda" by both "super powers" formed opinions, to believe in "communism" or "democracy". To some "the bigger, the better" was used to convince countries and attempt to intimate.
