The purpose of the Klan changes over time. Originally, at the time the war between the states ended, its purpose was to combat the Republican party, the Freed Men’s Bureau, and Carpetbaggers. This created many racial problems, because the Northern Republicans were promising the freed slaves many things if they would vote Republican, at the same time they were turning away many white voters who had served in the Confederate army or government. Since democracy had been short-circuited in the American South, many turned to lawlessness to insure their voice was still heard. This plays out time and time again in the American South, where the majority will vote one way, but a federal judge will strike down what they voted for and create hostility and animosity towards those who feel they have no voice.
