What was the purpose for The Pharos of Alexandria?
The main purpose for the lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was to have been a lighthouse much like today’s lighthouses’ purpose – to guide ships safely to harbour. Alexandria was a busy harbour, with many trade ships coming in, and the Pharos enabled safe passage. Sailing in this coastal region was very dangerous, so it was built to help the sailors navigate their return to the Great Harbor. It was also both a practical and unique symbol of the ‘glory’ of the ancient city of Alexandria, which flourished under Ptolemy Soter.
