What was the range of age of children evacuated in ww2?
The ages of evacuees from London and other major cities varied considerably. The evacuation usually conjours up pictures of children of school age (roughly 6-14) being moved to safety but it also involved pregnant women, mothers with under 5’s, children’s “helpers” and teachers and the disabled. They were taken primarily to places in Britain such as Norfolk and other parts of the East Anglia region, Southern Wales, Gloucestershire and the Scottish Lowlands for example. There were also some moved to Canada and for those were able to afford it, moved privately to Australia, the US and South Africa. This evacuation to other countries was continued by the government but was scrapped after a ship carrying evacuated children to Canada was torpedoed and sunk with the loss of 80% of the children on board. I think the government gave the evacuation plan the name Operation Pied Piper.
