What was the reason of the sympathy of the Royal Dutch Shell for the Wiwa family?
Well, Royal Shell paid for the “security forces” to guard their wellheads and pipelines; those same ‘security forces’ arrested some protesters, and also fired on crowds (as well as bystanders) in Nigeria. Wiwa was one of the people sentenced after his arrest, then hung (I believe) There have been many more of these instances, and not just protests, but people trying to protect their lands. Nigeria citizens are deprived of all of the profits Nigeria government collects from Royal Dutch Shell’s oil production. Wiwa, and other Nigerian citizen/activists protested burning off of gases caused by oil production. The gases could be harnessed to produce energy (low cost, even ‘free’) energy for Nigeria. Royal Shell refuses to spend the extra money (even though their profits were in the billions in 2008) to help those same citizens get any energy. All the citizens of Nigeria get is pollution and destruction of water resources. The settlement to the Wiwa family is a pittance – Don’t buy Shell ga
