What was the specific time period of the Hollywood Studio System?
The studio system began with the advent of filming in the area we know as Hollywood, around the time of World War I. The major studios were established by the mid-1920s. The system continued in Hollywood until the 1960s when it waned badly as independent film production became popular. The studio system was gone by 1970. Universal was the last studio to sign contract players during the early 1960s. Sharon Gless was the last actress to sign as a contract player with the studio.
