What was the UNs stance on the Conflict in Northern Ireland?
The UN never really had a policy for Northern Ireland, as the conflict was an internal one to the UK, and the rest of the UK seemed stable enough to deal with it. In 1969 the government of the Republic of Ireland considered bringing the matter before the UN Security Council or General Assembly. This never materialised, however, because it could not be decided on which grounds to bring the appeal (either as challenge to Partition or an appeal on behalf of the position of Northern Ireland Catholics). The then Irish Minister for Foreigh Affairs Dr. Hillery had the opportunity to force a vote on the issue in the General Assembly but in the end chose not to risk relations with the UK government.
