What was the warsaw pact and how did it affect the cold war?
The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between most East European countries supporting Communism and had major military backing from the USSR. It was formed as a response to NATO, which was formed by most West European countries supporting Capitalism and had major military backing from the USA. They believed that Capitalism would become aggressive and go to war against East Europe, whilst NATO believed that Communism would become aggressive and go to war against West Europe. The Warsaw Pact consisted mainly of Finland, the USSR, Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and most countries in East Europe that weren’t part of the USSR. It didn’t have as much impact on the Cold War compared to NATO, but it certainly united Communists against the threat of Capitalism in Europe. If the Warsaw Pact hadn’t been formed chances are the USA and NATO would’ve become more likely to use force in East Europe to cause more countries to adopt Capitalism.
