I’m sure you’ll hear a lot of opinions on this. President Nixon was running for re-election, and wanted to dig up some dirt on his opponent. Never mind the fact that he was well ahead in the polls and not really in danger of losing the election. He authorized a break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate Hotel and Office complex, and the burglars were caught in the act. He could have done several things at this point: claim to have known nothing of the matter and let his people go to jail (which they did anyways), admit his involvement to the American public and ask for forgiveness (I think the public has always been ready to forgive someone who admits to wrongdoing, as rarely as that has happened). Instead he attempted to cover the incident up. He instructed federal agencies to not investigate, he fired the prosecutor, he refused to cooperate with the investigation.
