What Weakened The Roman Army?
Part of the problem was distance – are Rome conquered more and more land, the soldiers were posted farther and farther away from home. In some cases, they settled on a semi-permanent basis, in foreign lands, took foreign wives and had families. Quite often they simply deserted when the army moved on, and stayed where they were. The other major problem was the decision to take non-Romans into the army. They had divided loyalties and weren’t bound by Roman ethics.
