With due respect to Lili’s answer, it is not correct that Monet’s painting depicted the celebration of the World’s Fair (the Paris Exposition Universelle); in fact, the painting marked the celebrations of 30 June 1878 of the young Third (bourgeois) Republic, see paragraph starting: Much closer to us… at http://www.parisvoice.com/index.php?optiā€¦ and this fact inspired his celebratory painting.
