What were elizabethan attitudes to love and romance?
It was fine, as long as the price was right! It was an age when love was considered an inadequate basis alone for marriage; but there were still many poems and plays written about love. Courtly love, that tradition of the Middle Ages, was waning, but there were still traces of the knightly character swooning and doing service to the married woman of higher status. http://elizabethan.org/compendium/10.htm… I think I read somewhere that the concept of romantic love began with Shakespeare’s portrayal of the star-crossed lovers in “Romeo and Juliet”. Out of the established orderliness of life, love could “shake things up”, as in “Antony and Cleopatra” and the “world well lost”.
