What were Hitlers foreign policy goals between 1933-1939?
“Eines Volk, eines Reich” — which required reversal of the Treaty of Versailles. The Dolfuss Affair was part of the sequence of events which led to the Anschluss, the unification of Austria and Germany into one nation of German-speaking peoples. Like Hitler, Dolfuss was a fascist who sought support from Mussolini. In one of those classic “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” incidents, Mussolini actually threatened to go to war with Hitler if Hitler invaded Austria to overthrow Dolfuss! But, German Nazis eventually got to Dolfuss without Hitler’s help and simply shot him. That created political chaos in Austria which was not fully resolved until Hitler took over the country four years later. Germany was under severe restrictions imposed by the Versailles Treaty in terms of having any real military.
