What were some of the differences between editing on film vs. editing on the AVID?

Because it is very easy to make changes on the AVID and everything is randomly at your fingertips at any given moment, and because the editing process is really a long process of thinking and re-thinking, on a visual level it made things easier. When you’re cutting on film and you want to move things around a little and change things, it’s physically an enormous task. So in some respects you really think more before you make a cut, or switch things around on film. But in the AVID that’s really easy to do, you can do and undo, and save cuts from weeks ago and bring it back, and pull in certain elements from a previous cut to work into a current cut. In a sense, it allows you much more creative freedom to try different things, and finally come up with what works the best. On the one hand there’s more freedom, and on the other hand I tend to do things more, without thinking about it further. I love cutting on film because visually and tactilely it’s just wonderful.
