What Were Some of the Earlier July 4th Celebration Traditions?

0

While modern celebrations consist largely of outdoor barbecues, picnics and grand displays of colorful fireworks, the earliest 4th of July celebrations were rather different. During the 19th century, explosives were often fired into the air from cannons in a series of salutes. Eventually the majority of cannons became unusable due to their old age, and the practice was discontinued. Red, white and blue may be the most noteworthy colors to symbolize the United States, but in the 19th century, there was plenty of appreciation for green, too! Buildings were adorned with the color, and soldiers would include it in their garb for the day. Eventually, the American flag’s prominent colors overrode green completely.
