What were some of the main jobs in the southern colonies?
During the colonial period, 90% of the population worked in farming. Many of the farmers also had a second job. Daniel Boone was a farmer. During the winter he would hunt for animal skins. In the spring he would return to Boone, North Carolina, and plant his crops. After his crops were planted, he would head east to Fayetteville, North Carolina. There he sold his skins to a farmer, who was also a hatter, a tavern keeper, and a probate judge. Thomas Jefferson was a farmer. Being a lawyer was a sideline. George Washington was a farmer. Selling whiskey and surveying were sidelines. So most people in the southern colonies had farming as their day job.
