In a warship (now as then) most of the work is routine: cleaning, maintenance, repair etc. A wooden sailing warship contained sailors of various classes. Bearing in mind that the ship might need to manoeuvre quickly, they had plenty of guys to haul on ropes to adjust the sails. The elite of the able seamen was the topmen who climbed into the rigging to set or take in sail as necessary. All of these would also do routine cleaning etc. There were also specialists, each under a head of department: sail;makers, carpenters, cooks, ropemakers, coopers (barrel makers) etc. The boatswain was the petty officer in overall charge of the ship’s condition, and he and his mates would get assistance from other departments as needed. The officer class above them in the Armada (unlike navies today) was twofold: the captain and his lieutenants were, basically, soldiers and their function was to direct actual fighting.
