What were the Seminoles before they came to Florida?
The core of the Seminole people did not “come” to Florida. This is, and was, their home. In the 1770s, English speakers encountered them for the first time and decided to call them Seminoles, but the Indians continue to know and remember that they were Yuchi or Yamasee or Tequesta or Abalachi…….or any of the hundreds of tribes that had lived and hunted all over the Florida peninsula for thousands of years before the coming of the English or the Spaniards.
