What whas Sigmund Freuds main theory?
Psychoanalytic theory. He thought that all people had mental hang ups or fixations which caused mental illness. According to his theory, all people have a set amount of emotional energy (he referred to as libido) that they could use to deal with problems. People develop fixations when they don’t deal with their problems which causes emotional energy to be stuck there, resulting in the person having less emotional energy to help them deal with future problems. He believed that personality was made up of the id, ego, and superego. The id is the primal urges of the person (e.g. sex, eating, drinking, violence, etc). When a baby is born their personality is made up completely of id (they want to eat now, and it doesn’t matter what you’re trying to do!). The superego develops during the latency stage of development (if I remember correctly) and is the morality principle. It tells what you should do.
