What will a 90-day freeze on West Bank settlement building honestly achieve?
You are right, it will achieve nothing except provide US politicians with something to boast about ‘the talks were a success – we didn’t want them to start building again’ whilst hoping no one looks at the detail too closely. Of course not including East Jerusalem is just idiotic, as this is the main area being argued over! The US government is desperate to get some success out of these talks, and when you consider that neither Israel not the Palestinians are willing to change their position of ‘this is my land, not yours’ I suppose this is the best they were ever going to get. It’s in their political interest to spin it as a success, though in reality it will only worsen relations between the two countries, and do nothing to stop the arguments or killings.
