What will happen to Comet Holmes?
Holmes’ future is uncertain. Perhaps the current outpouring of gas will cause it to lose energy and it will become little more than any anonymous dirty snowball continuing on its seven year orbit. Perhaps it will brighten further or grow an impressive tail. Many comets are eventually pulled into the Sun’s gravitational field, to end their lives as nothing more than steam and liquidised rock.
