What will happen to the boating and touring businesses currently operating in the proposed national marine conservation area?

We don’t expect any change to boating and touring businesses. Charter boat and eco-tourism businesses can play an important role in national marine conservation areas, by offering visitors unique experiences related to learning about the maritime or natural history of the region. Those currently operating in the study area appear to have minimal impact on the environment and local lifestyles. Parks Canada’s policy encourages businesses and non-profit organizations to help visitors understand, appreciate, and enjoy the marine environment. Some recreational boaters have suggested that modest facilities, such as pit privies and fire rings at frequently used sites, would enhance their experience and eco-tourism opportunities. At the same time, such facilities could reduce environmental impacts. If a national marine conservation area is established on Lake Superior, Parks Canada will welcome opportunities to partner with boating and touring businesses to achieve common goals.
