What will the Canadian Forces’ role in the Arctic be?
A7. In cooperation with other government departments and agencies, the Canadian Forces have a significant role to play in defending Arctic sovereignty and addressing potential security challenges in the North. The Canada First Defence Strategy provides the tools and capabilities necessary to strengthen the Canadian Forces’ presence in this area. In support of the Canada First Defence Strategy, the Government of Canada has announced a number of measures that will help defend Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic. Key initiatives such as Arctic/Offshore patrol ships, a deep water docking and refueling facility, an Arctic training centre, as well as the modernization and expansion of Canada’s Rangers will ensure that the CF is prepared to address future challenges in the Arctic. Together, these initiatives will bolster the Canadian Forces’ ability to both respond to contingencies in the region and conduct Arctic surveillance.
