As someone who lives in the area and is a frequent Disney traveler, stay on Disney property. It’s cheaper than anything close, and what is cheaper can be a 30-45 drive away with all of the traffic. By the time that you pay for gas and time wasted, you are practically paying the same thing. Staying on property is great. Buses take you to where ever you need to go or you can get free parking if you decide to drive. At the value resorts, you can rent a fridge or the better resorts have one in room. The closest grocery stores to property are ridiculously over prices, but if you go down a couple of exits on E I-4, there is a new Wal-Mart on International Drive. There are also lots of great restaurants off property that are close (at the crossings) like Chevy’s (Mexican) or down the road a little bit there is a Giordano’s (which is my favorite chain Chicago pizza place — only location outside of Illinois).
