What happens when someone uses your Social Security number to work the number is registered under their name. So now that SS number is registered under two names. The illegal alien can not file for Social security benefits because they will have to prove they are a citizen. The problem occurs when you file for benefits and now the SS office has to determine why there are two names under that number. It can take months or years to get this straight. FYI – The Social Security office gets alerted as soon as there is a new name using an old SS number but they choose not to investigate until someone files for benefits. This problem could be handled much earlier and resolved as well as working to prevent someone from using your SS number to get illegal employment. Also: When someone uses your number to gain employment they also get Social Security deductions from their paycheck. This money does not get reflected on your record because of the different name.
