You would get status 85s, 46s, or 91s and some workstations (depending on which engine got to the files first) would not be able to get access. This is generally avoidable by converting to the 7.x file format so that legacy v6.15 & 5.x engines cannot even open the files. Generally the P.SQL 7 and P.SQL 2000 workstation and client/server engines don’t experience issues like this unless there is a network protocol issue (broken transport or such) contributing to the problem. Pervasive.SQL 2000 is even less likely to experience this because requesters are built into the WE and WGE plus you have smart scout to diagnose these issues.
