What year did David Ogilvy create his ad for Aga Cooker featuring a photo of a nude woman?”
It was a picture by David Manet: This is my first advertisement and it embarrasses me to reproduce it. No headline, no promise, no information about the product. Certainly, nobody had ever shown a nude in an advertisement before, but, in this case, it was irrelevant to the product—a cooking stove. David Ogilvy, Ogilvy on Advertising, New York: Vintage Books, 1985, p. 25. Given that the Aga Cooker was introduced in 1922, the advertisement mentions “8 years ago”, so I would actually say 1934. Of course, Ogilvy published Theory and Practice of Selling an Aga Cooker in 1935. What an amazing biography!
