Whats a vector image?
If you think of ‘computer graphics’ as being the heading at the top of the tree, the next two headings would be vector graphics and bitmap graphics. Vector graphics are composed of objects, each with their own set of properties such as shape, colour, position, outline etc. Each object is based on a mathematical calculation, and is recalculated when you change the object. Therefore, you can change the properties as often as you like and you will never lose definition. This is the biggest advantage of a vector image. The disadvantage is that it’s more difficult to achieve a true ‘real life’ look – photos can’t be vector images. Vector images are best for logos, diagrams, cartoon-type images, maps and illustrations.
