Whats an Easter Bonnet?

0

The tradition of the Easter Bonnet possibly dates back to the late 1800’s. Easter Sunday was known as the “Sunday of Joy”. Mothers and daughters who had worn dark and drab colours during the period leading up to Easter began to wear colourful hats to the Easter celebration in church. The hats, usually made of straw, were adorned with flowers, ribbons and lace. The round shape is thought to represent the sun and the brim is thought to represent the path taken by the sun as it revolves around the earth.
