Whats In Store for Basic Bacterial Research?
Basic research on bacteria is “at a crossroads” states a new report, “Basic Research on Bacteria: The Essential Frontier,” coming out of a workshop sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and NIH. Many investigators feel that R01-based basic bacteriology funding has leveled off because of an emphasis on large multi-investigator projects and biodefense research. The report explores whether this is so and makes a case for individual investigator-led research. In addition to identifying opportunities and setting priorities, it looks at key topics such as the impact of technological advances and the marketplace for microbiologists. The report also discusses the concern that not enough researchers are being trained in basic bacterial physiology and genetics.
