What’s known at this point about the ‘common learning environment’ that will be created for the pilot project courses?
When we use the term ‘common learning environment’ we are looking at all the various tools that could provide support for different teaching approaches. Any tool set, if it’s any good, won’t impinge on the value of the academic content being offered. We want to see which online modalities are most effective. On each campus, we will be working closely with staff members who already have had considerable expertise in offering online UC courses and supporting effective teaching and learning with technology. In the past, online courses were mainly offered in the campus extension and summer programs and also at the Centers for Teaching and Learning and Educational Technology groups. UC’s existing expertise will be a tremendous resource for the project and in turn, we hope the program can help these campus-based support groups expand their expertise and capacity in order to provide ongoing support for online courses in the future.
