This is like asking someone why they prefer coffee over tea, but it's worth trying to answer. The simplest answer is that live steam locomotives are real locomotives. While the electric trains most model railroaders use are faithful representations of real locomotives, they are in the end just facsimilies. Running an electrically powered model train is no more driving a train than running a radio controlled model car is driving a car.
